"trybe": AN OPERA IN PAINT In November 2006 Anthony Breslin one of Australia's most unique and innovative artists combined SCULPTURE, MUSIC, DANCE, PAINT, THEATRE and NEW MEDIA to realize his brainchild "trybe" an opera like no other, which captivated audiences as a confronting, evolving, moving and truly original artistic performance.
Trybe's ability to effortlessly fuse so many differing art forms into one cohesive theatrical performance allowed it to operate powerfully on many levels. Both as a wondrous spectacle of fresh entertainment and as a piece of social theatre with much to say regarding, human unity, existentialism, racism, ritual, social identity, German expressionism, and the spiritual values historically associated with colour itself. "trybe" is an experience that grabs it's audience's attention by the throat and hold it in thrall until the last gasp of the performance, as the painter (Breslin) emerges scarred from a canvas that appears almost like a battlefield of drama, noise and light.
Composer/musician Greg Long's powerful, evocative score helped further realize Breslin's unique vision. As his original sound scape combines many genres and influences into a colourful melting pot, to produce sounds that are contrasting yet confluent, old yet highly contemporary, sacred yet profane.
Plaintiff strains of cello, mesh against pounding rhythms, soaring notes and abstracted "found sounds". Ancient Yemen songs bleed into Asian street scapes both vying desperately to be heard over the din created by a world growing so fast the pains are truly audible.
Trybe's first season was as memorable for its performers as it was for its audience as its very nature allowed it to be a creative process unfolding in front of both its participants and its viewers! A feat rarely attempted let alone achieved in today's many forms of theatrical entertainment.
Anthony is currently planning "Trybe's" next performance run, which promises to be even more captivating, inventive and evocative than the first season! | |
